Basic Gear list (e.g. camping): basic 2-man tent, split between two riders. Lightweight sleeping bag and liner, therma-rest type mattress, 3 litre camelback with space for maps, personal items, Revelate Tangle bag for water bladder/food.
Rider name: Thomas Lindup
Age: 25
Profession: Trail Builder/ Journalist/ Unemployed (Actually at the time of the event)
Cycling experience (endurance event or touring history): Numerous 24 hour solo races, some that went well, some that put me in the medic tent. Many silly large rides between cities in NZ that are long drive in cars. 2010 Brevet for me was an example of ambition, realisation, resentment, reassignment then comfort.
Bike (make, model and colour): Niner Sir in orange, (same steed as last time) but now with a fancy new carbon fork.
Bike Age: 2008 (steel bikes never die).
Bike setup (racks, modifications, wheel size, tyre size): Currently my bike hangs up without any barely anything that follows because I am in Australia. This aside the set up will be:
Bike: Niner carbon forks, 38c cycle cross tires, Sram/Shimano driveline with 180mm cranks, Al raiser bars with aero clip on's, Magura Mata 160mm brakes (f/r), Hope/Stans 29’er wheels, old faithful and almost broken Gobi saddle, ergon grips.
Accessories: Freeload racks, dry bag, bento box, mountain feed bag, Ay-Up lights (not for riding all night), under seat bag (small), peanut butter jar, two bottle mounts,.
Basic Gear list (e.g. camping): Proper bivy bag (upgraded from last time), compact synthetic down jacket, warm riding pants, lots of food, batteries, jacket, hopes and dreams, small hydro pack, map light (secret project), hip flask (non-alcoholic whiskey), the shirt on my back, a small length of dehydrated 1965 rustic curtain, two pairs of shorts, multi tool, hunting knife (for the limes), small road pump, all too vague course notes on torn scraps of paper.
Comments: A faster and lighter set up than last time with better equipment as 2010 was truly a marginal affair with a glorified rubbish bag and pocket of loose change. Better racks too with the Freeloads instead of a beam rack, lowering the centre of gravity and not having to worry about breaking the frame or seat post. Cycle cross tires too this time for greater on road speed and more discomfort off road, some of this I hope to be countered by the carbon fork and steel frame. I am still planning on camping it up in parks and the side of the road. Still all ideas as I will be putting this altogether a day or so before the start. Can’t wait to see you all on the start line and wish you all the best with final preparations.
